Why Do I Hate Every Photo of Myself? (And What Actually Fixes That)

Let me guess.

Someone pulls out a camera and your whole body tenses up. You tilt your chin, try to find your “good side,” force a smile, and then when you see the result you think… that does not even look like me.

And so you avoid it. You skip the group photo. You crop yourself out. You keep the same LinkedIn headshot from 2017 because at least in that one you look “okay.”

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something. You are not the problem.

It’s Not You. It’s Every Bad Photo Experience You’ve Ever Had.

Think about it. Most of the photos you’ve hated were taken in situations where nobody was paying attention to how you actually look best. A quick snap at an event. A group shot where someone yelled “smile!” and you froze. A corporate headshot day where you got 90 seconds, zero direction, and fluorescent lighting that made everyone look exhausted.

Of course you hated those photos. They weren’t set up for you to succeed.

The problem was never your face. It was the experience. No guidance, no connection, no one helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera. Just point and shoot and hope for the best.

That is not how great photos happen.

What Changes When Someone Actually Guides You

Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again in my studio. A woman walks in and says “I’m not photogenic” within the first five minutes. By the end of the session, she’s looking at the screen with tears in her eyes saying “that’s actually me?”

What changed? Not her face. Not her body. Not some filter or heavy editing.

The experience changed.

When someone takes the time to understand who you are, what your goals are, and what makes you feel comfortable, the photos come out differently. When someone coaches you through every expression, tells you exactly what to do with your hands, adjusts your posture so you feel natural instead of stiff, and creates an environment where you can actually relax… everything shifts.

You stop performing. You stop overthinking. And suddenly the camera captures who you actually are.

The Difference Between a Bad Photo and a Bad Experience

Most people think they hate photos of themselves. What they actually hate is the feeling of being photographed without support.

Nobody taught you how to stand in front of a camera. Nobody told you that a slight chin tilt or a shoulder drop can completely change how you look in a photo. Nobody gave you permission to just breathe and be yourself.

That’s not your fault. But it is fixable.

What Would It Feel Like to Actually Love a Photo of Yourself?

I’m not talking about a photo that’s been edited beyond recognition. I mean a photo that looks like you on your best day. The version of yourself that your clients already see. The version your family sees when you walk into a room. Confident, warm, grounded, and real.

That photo exists. You just haven’t had the right experience to capture it yet.

Questions You Might Be Thinking

What if I’ve literally never liked a single photo of myself?

You’re not alone. That’s actually the most common thing my clients say before their session. It doesn’t mean you’re not photogenic. It means you haven’t been photographed by someone who knows how to bring out the real you.

Do I need to lose weight or change something about myself first?

No. You show up as you are. That’s the whole point. I work with you exactly as you are right now, and we create images that reflect the incredible woman you already are.

What if I feel awkward and don’t know what to do?

That’s literally my job. I coach you through every part of the session. You don’t need to know how to pose, how to smile, or what to do with your hands. I’ve got you.

If you’ve been putting this off because you “just don’t photograph well,” I want you to reconsider what that actually means. Because I’d bet everything it’s not about you. It’s about the experience you had.

And that part? We can absolutely change.
