Professional Headshots in Somerset County, NJ: What to Know Before You Book

If you’ve been thinking about getting professional headshots done and you’re somewhere in Somerset County, this one is for you.

A lot of women I talk to have been meaning to do this for months. Sometimes years. They keep saying “next month” and then next month becomes next quarter, and pretty soon they’re still using the same outdated photo from a conference in 2019.

Usually it’s not that they don’t want updated photos. It’s that they don’t know what the process involves, and that uncertainty makes it easy to keep pushing it off.

So I want to walk you through what actually happens from the moment you reach out to the moment you have your final images. No mystery or surprises.

It Starts With a Conversation

Before we ever pick up a camera, we talk.

I want to understand what you need these photos for. LinkedIn? A website refresh? A rebrand? Are you launching something new? Are you just tired of cringing every time someone asks for a current photo?

I also want to know how you feel about being in front of a camera. If the answer is “not great,” welcome to the club. Almost every woman I work with says some version of that in our first conversation. It doesn’t scare me. It just tells me what kind of experience I need to create for you.

This is also where we figure out what type of session makes sense. Some women just need a strong updated headshot. Others need a full set of branding photos to use across multiple platforms. We figure that out together.

Getting Ready for Your Session

Once your date is locked in, you get everything you need to feel prepared.

That includes wardrobe guidance, because nobody should be standing in front of their closet the night before a session wondering what to wear. I give you direction on colors, fit, what photographs well, and what to avoid. If you want to go deeper on the wardrobe piece, I wrote a full guide on what to wear for a corporate headshot that goes into more detail.

You can also add professional hair and makeup to your session. It’s optional. A lot of women love it because it takes one more thing off their plate, and they walk in feeling ready instead of rushed.

The whole point of this part of the process is that by the time your session day arrives, the only thing you’re thinking about is showing up.

What Happens When You Walk In

This is the part most women are nervous about, so let me tell you exactly what it looks like.

You walk in. We talk for a few minutes. No camera yet. I want you to feel settled before we start, because comfortable is what translates into photos that look like you.

Then we start shooting, and here’s where it might be different from what you’re picturing. I guide you through the whole session. Where to stand. How to angle your shoulders. What to do with your hands. When to soften your face, when to give me a little more.

You don’t need to come in knowing any of that. That’s what I’m there for.

What usually happens is this. The first few minutes feel a little awkward, the way anything new does. Then we get into a rhythm. We talk, we laugh, I adjust things as we go, and at some point you forget the camera is even there. By the end, most of my clients are asking if we can keep going.

If you’ve ever had a bad experience with photos and it made you decide you’re “not photogenic,” I wrote a full post on why most people who feel that way had bad experiences, not bad faces. Worth a read before you book anything.

What You Walk Away With

This part of the process is one of the things that makes my sessions different.

You see your images in real time as we go. We review them together throughout the session, and by the time we wrap up, you’ve already chosen your favorites.

From there, I edit your images and deliver them to you in high resolution. Ready to use wherever you need them.

Why It Matters That I’m Local

If you’re somewhere in Central Jersey, this fits into your life without becoming a project. You’re not blocking off a whole day or driving across the state. You come in, we do the session, you leave with what you came for.

And because headshots and branding photography is all I do, the entire experience is built around what you actually need. The consultation, the prep, the session itself, the way I coach you through it. All of it is designed for women coming in for exactly this.

My studio is in Bridgewater, and most of my clients are working women based right here in Central Jersey, with a few who drive in from neighboring towns or come down from the NYC area.

If You’ve Been Putting This Off

You probably have a reason.

Maybe you’ve had a bad experience before. Maybe you keep telling yourself you’ll do it when things slow down, or when you finally feel ready, or when you figure out what to wear. Maybe you’ve just been busy.

Whatever it is, I hear it. I get it. And here’s the only thing I want you to take from this post.

You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to show up.
